  • My First Blog: An Evolution into Wrestling and a Bit on ROH

    Posted on 5/23/07 8:48 AM

My name is Doug. I am typing this from work before I get busy so please forgive any grammar errors. I am 28 years old and I work as a special education teacher in Alabama. I became a wrestling fan when I was around eight years old or so. I don't claim to be a smart mark or anything like that although I do not consider myself to be totally uneducated as to what the business is all about. In other words, I think I am constantly learning more about the sport I have been a fan of for over 20 years.

I think wrestling began to mean alot to me at an early age because it filled a void in my life. It may sound funny but it did. At that early age I rememember watching Ultimate Warrior and I thought there was nothing greater. My father would take me to shows to see the wrestlers. I remember my first autograph was from Hacksaw Jim Duggan. That moment was the first time I ever saw someone who I had seen on television in person and it has always stuck with me.

Shortly after that my father was in a terrible accident leaving him permanently disabled and bed ridden. Wrestling to me became the last thing that my father and I spent time doing together. That is why it became important. It was a father and son thing that we had shared. As the years progressed I grew into the typical wrestling fan. I loved the nWo. I loved DX and marked for them. I also loved the Bill Goldberg powerhouse type of guys. If the guy looked like he was dominant then I marked. I also liked spot monkeys. I was like that until around 1998-1999 at which time I stopped watching wrestling altogether due to personal issues.

I began to watch wrestling again in 2005. Things seemed so different and that is what intrigued me. Triple H held the title that many times? Rey Mysterio is like....a really big name now? There is no wCw? Who the heck is Tyson Tomko and Gene Snitsky? Undertaker rides a motorcycle? Now those may seem like strange questions but that was what I was thinking as ignorant as that sounds.

The internet was much huger now and many of my questions were answered through the web. I got my cable access back as well and began to watch Raw and Smackdown again. I was not overly intrigued by the programming at all but it was fresh to me at the time seeing that I knew hardly anyone on either roster except for the main stays. I soon foud out that I missed the best years of WWF (Oh it is WWE now). I guess I hoped that things would pick back up.

In the end I am glad I left wrestling for a while. When I came back to it I came back as a more mature fan. I actually wanted to you know...see guys wrestle. For some reason I began to like Benoit. For some reason I began to like JBL. I started noticing who was doing a good job in the ring and working hard. I started noticing who was just lousy everytime I microphone reached within a ten foot radius of their body. Then all of a sudden two years ago what I expected to see as a fan and what I found entertaining in wrestling miraculously changed. Things I used to love are exactly what I can't stand now and that is hard to explain.

Recently with the help of a few friends from the Wrestling General Board as well as my good friend Fred who also posts there, I have gotten into Ring of Honor. This is my favorite promotion now. I highly recomend that everyone checks it out. I don't like it because others like it. I like it because it fits what I am into as a fan and at the end of the day I feel after watching a show that it was done right and entertaining. I have never watched a ROH show and felt like things could have been written or done in a different or better way except for a few exceptions. I am basing this view from seeing only five shows though.

The only thing I do not care for in Ring of Honor are the Street Fight type matches. I feel that the wrestlers are so talented that some of these matches are not even needed to get the show or card over to people. Now that is just my opinion. I also understand that this type of match appeals to certain audiences and fans. Just for though...I do not need it. I thought Colt Cabana vs. Nigel McGuiness was a great match on the Manhattan Mayhem card in terms of entertainment and wrestling. I then watched Colt Cabana vs. Homicide in a hardcore match and I thought to myself, why are these two talented guys in need of putting themselves through this when they could easily just wrestle a match that would leave fans very entertained and happy? Just my two cents.

Lastly I will go over who my five favorite wrestlers are right now. Keep in mind this is from a very limited viewing of Indy wrestling. Also keep in mind that in this region we only get WWE programming and some TNA.

    1. Bryan Danielson - An excellent wrestler. Great on the microphone. Has tons of heart which is lacking in the big promotions to me. Can draw heat easily and people love him still.

    2. Triple H - I love Triple H and I always have. It will never change. He is the biggest name in the big promotions today who is still an active wrestler. He is also the most influential. Good behind the curtains or outside of them to get what he wants done. Could eventually take over WWE after being just a midcarder.

    3. Jack Evans - Okay this guy is a spot monkey and that is it. Call it my immaturity but I love him. I think he is amazingly athletic as well. If he just did spots what would be the point in liking him. However, his wrestling is not given the credit it deserves and the spots make people look past just how good he can move.

    4. Alex Shelley - He reminds me of Chris Jericho honestly. He could be a major star if he was booked right and given a bigger audience.

    5. Roderick Strong - He chops people to hell. No seriously, he lets his work do the talking for him and I always like a guy who does that.

Week ending Jun 10, 2007
Rank Wrestler
1

Shelton Benjamin

No wrestler sacrificed and gave more of himself for this week than Shelton Benjamin. He made bigger spots and took bigger bumps than Jeff Hardy. That says alot.

2

Jeff Hardy

Gave an excellent performance in the ladder match. He wrestled the next night. The knee injury was legitimate as you could see it at match begining yet he still finished the ONS match.

3

Matt Hardy

He took some punishment in the tag match. Having someone land on you when laying face down a ladder hurts. He still wrestled the next night.

4

"Wildcat" Chris Harris

He had the second best match on any show this week. He goes over James Storm who was just a bit less passionate in the battle.

5

James Storm

Who knew he had it in him or that he could put together a match that good? I can't stand him or the whole storyline but boy was that a good match.

6

Bobby Lashley

Tehained the ECW Title and won against all the ECW Originals in a hardcore match. Botched an ariel move and gave us a funny.

7

John Cena

Defended the title in a lackluster match but found a way to win against Khali and Umaga at once in yet another...lackluster match.

8

Randy Orton

WWE trusts him to put RVD out and wrestle him in his last match. He then gets to beat the hell out of Flair the next night.

9

Edge

Made Batista look decent in a match and retained his title.

10

Candice Michelle

Beat Melina again. Put Cryme Tyme over and was entertaining. Has gotten herself way over with the crowd again. Where is her title shot may I ask? Has it not been earned?
