Why Does Everyone Want a Talker?
by Impact on 2/24/08 6:03 PM
I keep reading the same stuff about Jeff Hardy and his bad mic skills. Okay, what's your point?
Are you watching wrestling to watch wrestling? Or hear people talk?
I'd much rather have someone like Hardy come out and give a two line promo and then win virtually every match he's been in since Armageddon, than listen to someone like, Chris Jericho, who went on and on and on before Armageddon and then didn't even win his match. I can't stand the talking. I want to see action.
Hardy is talented enough to be world champion. I know it, the company knows it, and the company is giving him his shot at a run later this year. Not EVERYONE needs to be good on the mic to be a champion. Sometimes it's better to have a champion that just gets the job done rather than talk about it and then half the time not even win the match anyways.
I don't know about all you guys giving the SAME arguments about why Jeff doesn't deserve a shot simply cuz of his mic skills are watching, but I WANT to watch WRESTLING. Not a damn talk show.

Spot-run around-Spot-run around-Spot-run around. IMO, he's just not cut out to be champion and I can't see him as anything but a mid-card.

I just hope he chills with the drugs, thats why he is not main eventing mania. Because the wwe can not trust him yet. He was and probably still is irresponsible with the drugs.
From smekal on 2/24/08 9:05 PM
I agree with u Impact.I would love to see more superstars wrestle than talk. But ever since Vince took over he has tryed to change everything. He is trying to make it more entertaiment than wrestling, because he does not want any more Eddie and Chris tragtys. He really needs to stop all this bastered son shit and get back to what it really is Wrestling.I think thats why people like Edge,Cena, and Ortan have gone to the top. Vince wants more great promos than great matches.
From Petedaddydolla on 2/24/08 10:08 PM
Yes smekal and yes impact! Hardy is a phenomenal wrestler and it would of course be nicer to see more in ring action than Maury Povich moments, wouldn't it?

Let me start by saying I like Jeff Hardy and wouldn't mind seeing him become champ if only for a few weeks.
That being said, mic skills are essential to advance storylines and to build match psychology. I agree that wrestling ability should be primary but it is not the only thing.
Guys who can work in the ring at a high level and talk well generally become Main Event stars. Edge, Triple H, HBK, Rock, Austin, Angle, Flair are prominent examples.
Guys who talk exceptionally well and are only average in the ring can become main event stars. Cena, Hogan and Roddy Piper are good examples of this.
There also are examples of guys who were average on the mic who became main eventers. Bret Hart and Chris Benoit are two that come to mind. So how did they get to be main eventers? They were absolutely GREAT in ring performers. They were so great in the ring that it overshadowed their deficiencies on the mic. Both got better on the mic but neither was ever all that smooth.
Hardy is a pretty good in ring worker but certainly not GREAT. Therefore his mic skills need to be at least very good to put him over the top as a main eventer. Sadly he isn't good on the mic, in fact, he's pretty bad. Add in some personal problems and you have a combination that has kept him as a second tier star in both WWE and TNA.

mic skills are way overrated. I don't see Hardy as being a main event champ, especially not for a long period of time, but it's not because of his mic skills. Hardy could get over as Champ with average mic skills, it's the fact that the WWE Title is just not geared towards his style that's holding him back.
From JamesP on 2/25/08 8:30 PM
Yeah, since this is WWE, a company so obsessed with having every main eventer wrestle the same style to the point where they sign top notch indy workers such as CM Punk and Ace Steele to a developmental deal so they can change their style, I doubt that WWE is willing to push him. And I just can't see him in anywhere besides the upper midcard.

personally I watch more for the promos than for the matches. Very rarely will u get a five star match on raw, but what you will get is someone like jericho giving a hell of a promo. Hardy does have great ring-work, and i am one of the guys who thinks he deserves the title, but i do really wish he'd improve his mic skills.
From cptcharisma1157 on 2/25/08 9:59 PM
and jericho hasn't lost a one on one match since his return..... and who wins is decided by the writers, jericho's every bit as good a wrestler as hardy...
(oh, and i did just see jericho beat hardy, haha)
From theone86 on 2/26/08 12:28 AM
I'm not saying something can't be made out of mic skills. Jericho is terrific on the mic, and it hekped him get over instantly with the WWE fans. What I'm saying is that it's always such a cop out excuse to not push a wrestler who doesn't get huge pops from marks. You don't NEED great mic skills to have good fueds or put on great matches. There are ways to get over while not focusing on the mic. As Paul Heyman said, highlight what works, hide what doesn't. I will always give props to people who can work the mic, but I don't think that's any excuse to not push someone who is lacking in that particular area.
From theminister on 2/26/08 10:57 PM
Hardy does not have average mic skills. He has below average to poor mic skills. Last night on Raw, there was very good mic work by Orton, Cena, Triple H and Kennedy. Hardy would never be able to hold his own with those guys on the stick.
I agree with cptcharisma. RAW and SD are not about great matches. Those only happen occasionally. They're about moving storylines forward and to push PPVs. That usually requires guys to work the mic. We saw that last night.
From Impact on 3/8/08 1:32 PM
You all have to remember (if you ever watched then) that Hardy never even got on the mic before, and when he would talk backstage or something, in comparison to now, it was atrocious. So despite him having subpar mic skills today, they're a big step up from years ago. So give Jeff credit for improvement.
Also, I'm not sayin promos are a bad thing. They are essential. But there's such a thing as overkill. And that's what WWE is doing.
And on top of that... there have been a lot of poor matches as of late too...
From CenaHardyfanatic on 6/22/08 3:05 PM
First of all, I am a HUGE Jeff Hardy fan and I have been ever since he debuted in 1999 and it pains me whenever I hear a negative word towards him, I completely agree that it is wrestling shows not promo shows but I also understand that if the WWE focused directly on wrestling and nothing else then the ratings would drop and the little kids will go back to Hannah Montana or whatever the case, I want Vince to stop focusing directly on entertainment but I don't want it erased completely because I know I'm one of the few females who would watched the WWE if it was only wrestling, but that's my two cents
From theone86 on 6/23/08 2:47 PM
Just to comment on something Impact said, Hardy did talk during his original WWE run, he just was more soft-spoken on the mic. Now WWE wants all of its wrestlers to do over-the-top promos so they can advance really goofy characters. I've seen Hardy do decent mic work before, it's not like he's incapable. And like I said, I don't think the focus always has to be on "mic skills". I think almost anyone can be decent on the mic if they really try, and I think calling mic skills is a cop-out. It's what they said about Benjamin, yet he cut good enough promos to get his Triple H fued by.
From cptcharisma1157 on 6/24/08 2:49 PM
Impact, i think ur a little off ur rocker. Why did people like the Rock? Cause he was entertaining on the mic. Why did ppl like Austin? cause he bashed his boss and did things nobody had every done. Guys like Austin, Ric Flair, and Hulk Hogan certainly aren't beloved cause they did the stunner or a leg drop or a leg lock. They're loved for what they were able to do on the mic. They were loved for unmatched charisma.
In comparing Hardy to Jericho, 1) I would take Jericho's wrestling ability over Hardy's any night of the week.
2) Jericho is the best on the mic, and that's the main reason he's all-in-all one of the best ever.
From cptcharisma1157 on 6/24/08 2:51 PM
Plus, Jericho did win at Armageddon you ignorant boob. He WON by dq and never got another title shot. WTFuck!? That's a travesty in itself.
... Hardy is a good wrestler, and I think he deserves a world title, but don't belittle the best wrestler around in a pethetic attempt to prove your point.
