What Happened to all the Managers in WWE?
by DoubleL on 7/15/08 7:32 PM
Back in the 80's and early 90's of Pro Wrestling us as fans would usually see a wrestler (mostly heel) with a manger/ valet walking their wrestler to the ring and cheering them on throughout their matches. Greats like Bobby "the Brain" Heenan, "Classy" Freddie Blassie, Jimmy "Mouth of the South" Hart, Mrs. Elizabeth and Sherri Martel were apart of the WWE family making the matches interesting. Yeah I know three of the five listed are no longer living on this earth with of us but their work as a WWE character will not go overlooked. Each of them played a huge role in their superstar?s matches by interfering, distracting or creating ruckus on the outside. The managers now a day (what little or none we have left) couldn't hold a candle to the likes of the ones of the past.
Now a day, it seems none of the superstars have a manager and all the superstars are left to fend for themselves during interviews. If some of the less talented stars on the mic had the option of having a manager and allowing them to speak for them like Bobby Heenan use to do for the "Heenan Family", guarantee that star will get way more of a push. In his book, Heenan said that he would be paired with some people in order for them to receive a big push and for the most part, every person I have ever seen him paired with got major heat as a heel. Heenan was a great attraction to boring matches. Heenan would interfere or when he was getting pummeled by a baby face like Hogan or Bossman. He went on to say that Nick Bockwinkel was a horrible wrestler but Heenan would make the match interesting through his antics outside the ring. I believe the WWE needs to attract some managers back to their company to give some of the rising stars more of a push to become the next generation of the sport.

True, they should bring in some more managers, but then again, this isnt the 80's now is it?

Managers have been a part of wrestling throughout its history. The WWE definitely should develop more managerial talent. Matt Striker did a pretty good job with Big Daddy V. Tony Atlas is working that role now. I'd like to see more of that. There are tons of wrestlers in the WWE who could benefit from a manager. JBL, Rhodes/DiBiase, Umaga, Khali, Big Show to name a few.
I'd also like to see more stables/factions. La Familia is great, we need more of that. There are too many Lone Wolves in the WWE.
The WWE does seem to be into the bodyguard gimmick. Now we have three of them w/Cade, Neeley and Kendrick's Bodyguard. Although I'm not quite as fond of that.

Yeah I?m not too pleased with the three Cade, Neeley and Kendrick?s bodyguard. Those three aren't really speaking for their stars, yeah they interfere a little but not like the ones from the past.
TwistOfFate, yeah I know its not the 80's or 90's and the wresting has "evolved" into more of an entertainment rather than a sport, yada yada whatever. It?s just that I feel that managers can help evolve the less talented athletes into bigger stars.

Yeah, I'm with Minister. I'm not sure if it's the individual wrestler asking for a push or management wanting to push them, but it just seems like being a manager is never enough, like everyone NEEDS a singles push.
