The Genius Of The Four Faces Of Foley
by hulkamanialives4eva on 1/7/08 3:27 AM
I know a lot of people dont really like the idea of a guy with so many different wrestling personalities. But in my opinion, this has lead to some of the greatest moments in the WWE. I am here to list two of my favorites, and explain why i think they are some of the greatest moments in the WWE.
1) The 1998 Royal Rumble
This is one of the few Royal Rumbles to feature a man entering twice, let alone three different times. To see Cactus Jack, Dude Love, AND Mankind enter one royal rumble, to basicallyhave Mick Foley enter the Rumble three different times, is something that i doubt that we'll ever see replicated in the future of sports entertainment.
2) The introduction of Cactus Jack into the WWF to face Triple H in a Falls Count Anywhere match
It was as obvious to the fans that Mick Foley was behind these three other characters as it was that Mr. America was Hulk Hogan. Therefore, to have a videoclip before the match that included not one, not two, but all three of Foley's alter egos took technology that was pretty unheard of at the time.
So for all those out there who may be cynical about the idea of a superstar having multiple personalities like that, just look at what the WWF/WWE did with the Mick Foley characters, and you will see how these different personalities provide the opportunity for unique and intriguing sports entertainment that people will want to watch.

Not really a problem to me with all the different personalities but for the rumble it did make all the characters look really weak when they kept getting eliminated.

I think WWE really used, and still does use, Foley as sort of a novelty. Each one of those characters was unique in their own way. Dude Love was originally Mick's first foree into pro wrestling, his first alter-ego. He was someone with a backstory and someone Mick was very passionate about. Then WWE ressurects him as sort of a joke. Cactus Jack was Foley's most popular alter-ego, gaining fame in Japan, ECW, WCW, and some other organizations not only for his hardcore ring style, but dark and eccentric interviews. WWE ressurects him in order to give Foley a more hardcore edge so as to put Triple H over, because they had turned him into a softy with the new Dude and Mankind. Even Mankind, a character created in WWE, in part by members of WWE creative teams, was originally a dark character that was eventually turned into a walking punchline. And now it's sort of like, "Oh, look at Mick, he's got three alter-egos, isn't that cool, which one do you want to see in this match?" Mick Foley is an eccentric person with a knack for story-telling, and I think his talents go to waste at times in WWE. That being said, even though he was told to act like a joke at times by WWE, he still managed to create some great fueds and keep the fans engulfed in them. I still dislike the use of a creative work as a novelty, though.

Don't foget the classic Hell in a Cell match with Undertaker where we all heard J.R. give "The Call Heard 'Round The World":
"Good God Almighty! As Gos as my witness, he is broken in half!!"

See, that's a classic Foley moment. I believe that was still his darker incarnation of Mankind, before he did his vignette in Vinny Mac's hospital room. That's what kind of gets me, the stupid jokes are OK, except for the fact that they become the only thing some people remember. I remember Mick Foley for going through barbed wire exploding tables in Japan with Terry Funk, for spitting on the WCW Tag Team Title, for being bold enough to challenge the ECW fans in the old bingo hall, for being thrown off an allegedly 15 foot tall cell, for taking a dozen hard chair shots to the head from Rock, for putting on some genuinely great matches, always giving great interviews, and never hesitating to put an up and comer over whether they deserved it or not. It just bugs me when people go, "Oh, Mick Foley, wasn't he the guy who got eliminated from the Rumble three times as three different people?"
