Suggestions to improve this site!
by SirWilliam on 8/27/08 9:02 PM
Ok, in the off chance that some admistrator reads this blog...I have a few suggestions on how to improve this potentially great site.
Don't get me wrong, it's already an excellent place where wrestling fans can discuss and get the latest news, but let me suggest the following improvements-
*There should be a news section where writers hired for this site report legitimate news stories. I do not like how readers of the site can post news, because it seems very unreliable. I often find myself having to go to prowreslting.com or another news source to read the latest wrestling headlines. I'm sure I'm not alone in this and that's not good for your site!
*This site needs to be promoted and advertised more. I had no idea about it until I saw an add about it on facebook. That and only that is the reason that I even found out that this site existed. Advertisements would be very helpful in promoting the site.
*And in personal preference, try out new layouts for the website. Add a clor scheme, more graphics, maybe organize it a bit better to add to the appeal. You want to draw in new visitors to the site. THE one thing about this site that I love more than any other wrestling website is how fans can post blog entries that other fans can read and comment on. So kudos for ya'll for establishing that!
Well that's about all I wanted to get off my chest. I hope this site grows a larger fan base eventually. I know I'll stay around for the long-haul.

I found it the same exact way on face book and the color scheme would be a great addition.

- I don't really want to "staff" people to post stories that are just copied and pasted from other sites. The idea of a site where all of the news is posted by the users was something that has worked on sites like Digg.com and Reddit, and I thought would work out magnificently on wrestlingmarks. I was wrong, as only a few stories are posted a week, and I am doing half of the posting. As for whether or not this is a "reliable" method, that is a problem I WISH I had. I want to see a lot of stories posted first before worrying about the quality.
In short, I don't know what the fuck to do with the news section, as it's not working as it is and I don't have the answer.
- I started running an ad on wrestlingobserver.com this week. It's getting a lot of views but they aren't converting into very many signups. Also, advertising is not free, and since this website pretty much makes no money right now any advertising would have to come out of my pocket, and that's not happening unless I suddenly become rich.
- A re-design is coming. Right now I am working on revamping the comments section (I mentioned this elsewhere on the site a few weeks ago). After that I'll be doing a re-design. I don't really have a timetable on when these things will happen exactly but it could be as long as a month or two away. Keep in mind wrestlingmarks.com is run by one guy (me) and I only can do it in my spare time.
All in all I hope the site grows too, and even though I probably should have given up on it long ago I haven't yet. I thank everybody for their support and hope things pick up soon.

Ah, that explains a lot bpapa. Didn't realize that you were an owner of this site, rather then the SOLE owner.
Your actually doing a great job, better then I could hope to do anyday. The advertising you mentioned is good news, and I really think that this site will grow and solve all these problems you are worried about. The news section might work out with a larger fan base. Keep up the good work. Oh and you might want to consider hiring volunteers who could help you with the site, since you are right in saying you can only do so much in your spare time. Give these volunteers administrator abilities, and I bet you'd get some offers. I know I for one would be interested in helping you out. I'm unable to donate anything to the site money-wise, but I'd certainly help you out in any other way that I can. Contact me if your interested.

I dont know why, but it seems like this site was better a year ago then it is now.

A year ago was when I first started running the Facebook ads and handing flyers out at PPV shows. There was a huge bump in membership then.
