Overrated "fans"
by 92tombstone92 on 7/3/08 8:14 PM
This is more of a question than a blog. Why does every quote un quote "fans" only really like overrated superstars such as Batista, Cena, Y2J, etc?

Weird question 92tombstone92. Not sure which "fans" you're referring to.

I think there are two types of fans.
The casual fan and the smark.
The casual fan only knows about the business through what he or she sees on tv. Also, casual fans usually have not watched wrestling for too long. That would lead to the reasoning behind liking WWE's top faces (the good guys).
The smark on the other hand, is a smart fan who also uses the internet to find out more about professional wrestling. Smarks usually like the skilled wrestlers rather then the faces, which lead to some fans picking favorites in Mr Kennedy and Carlito even though they were the heels (bad guys).
Maybe that answers your question.

I understood where tombstone was going. The problem is that both are FANS.
Fans who like Batista and Cena are generally little kids, women, or casual fans who go wild for guys like that. These are the fans who buy lots of product. They buy every Cena t-shirt and all the foam fingers etc. So the WWE will always cater to them. They are still fans just different types of fans. When I was a kid I was one of these fans.
Then I grew up and became a fan who writes blogs on websites called wrestlingmarks. Maybe I don't buy foam fingers anymore but I watch religiously and appreciate good wrestling over fancy gimmicks.
Either way you cut it both are fans. They just like different things about wrestling. To belittle those who are not smarks and enjoy Cena or Batista is just wrong.
I get upset when we smarks get arrogant and forget from where we came from. Just because we know more about the industry and appreciate different things doesn't make us better fans. When I was little I marked out for the Hulkster. Now I couldn't care less about him as a wrestler. It doesn't make me a real fan now and an unreal "fan" then. It just makes me a different kind of fan now, one who enjoys and appreciates different things.
BTW, I don't personally think Jericho is overrated. He is incredibly skilled in the ring and on the mic. He is head and shoulders above Batista and Cena skill wise.

Yeah, Y2J is abit overrated with the save us, and now hes using it as a heel... Great review SirWilliam. Really like that.

I'm with theminister on this one. I marked out for EVERYONE, from Ultimate Warrior, to The Sandman. As a mark, I appreciate the entertainment value of the show, in ALL aspects. I'm a huge fan of technical skills (or chain wrestling, pick your poison...), but, I know that a GREAT gimmick will keep me interested in not only the character, but the show, overall, as well. I'll be realistic and admit that I found out early in life that wrestling was not like street fighting or even UFC, for that matter. Like every man, woman, and child who calls themselves a "smark", there are situations and gimmicks that just don't sit well with me (the SoCal Val/Sonjay Dutt/Jay Lethal love triangle pops suddenly into mind), and I gripe and moan on this wonderful website about it. But, that's the beauty of being a wrestling fan! Me being pissed about the Lakers (my fave b-ball team) losing the NBA championship isn't gonna make David Stern change that fact. But, my displeasure with a storyline, or a champion, or the push that a superstar gets (or doesn't get), along with the collective feelings of many other fans, will cause SOMEBODY at Titan Sports or in TNA to change the scenery! Vince says it all the time, and it is the motto for the promotion that I work for "If it weren't for the fans, there would be NO wrestling business". And we as marks, smarks, or casual wrestling fans need to stop being so damned uppity and simply ENJOY it for what it has always done for us: entertain.
