Olympics of Wrestling?
by SnoHo24 on 5/13/08 8:11 AM
I was watching RAW last night and was somehow drawn into the John Cena / William Regal argument. I was actually stricken with a great sense of patriotism when Cena defended the honor of the United States against Regal playing "God Save The Queen" as the show began.
Of course, we all know the national anthem was played prior to the broadcast, but it still made for a good storyline. It was good to hear some USA chants echo through an arena again.
Then, it hit me. With all the nationalities of superstars in the WWE, why not have a tournament for the honor of the superstars' home countries?
Think about it for a minute. Some examples could be:
Cena - USA
Santino - Italy
Carlito - The Caribbean
Regal - England
Khali - India
Kofi Kingston - Jamaica
Mysterio - Mexico (despite his roots in San Diego)
Jericho or Edge - Canada
Umaga - Samoa
And finally, play the "parts unknown" card and have the final entrant be:
Kane - Parts Unknown (as they used to at the beginning of his career)
You could have the 10 superstars face off in tournament fashion, and then have the winners square off in a 5-man elimination style (pinfall or tapout) battle royal. The last three will get title shots (or some other random honor).

It would make for an interesting show, but I think it's that the kind of idea that sounds much better than how it would actually be executed. I could see it working better on an indie show as a knockout tournament rather than on a WWE show. I think TNA could also do it better than WWE, as despite all their flaws, they do try and base some importance on their tournaments, and they do have the X World Cup coming up soon.
Over here last year there was the King of Europe Cup, where wrestlers represented 16 different companies from around the world, which was a success and was won by Nigel McGuinness (as far as I can remember).

I like the idea and throw in Vladimir Kozlov from Russia, Finlay from Ireland, and one of the Highlanders from Scotland.

Why not just have a KOTR sort of deal? I just think that this sort of tourney sounds too much like the World X Cup

it could be ok, but tna did already have that olympic tournament before.... and i dont like the idea of cena representing all of the us, there are plenty of other americans, and i dont think cena has any right to play the patriot card....
if i ran it, id make a the us, canada, mexico, and england have prliminary matches for the right to compete:
Regal v. Burchill, winner represents England...
Rey v. Chavo, winner represents Mexico
Jericho v. Edge, winner fights in the tournament...
have like 8 US guys (Cena, JBL, HBK, Orton, Triple H, Jim Duggan, Hardy and Hardy) fight for the spot in the tourny.
and you missed Finlay representing Ireland

Since Regal just became "unemployed", I think DH Smith should represent England, in honor of his father (he'd be more of a draw than Burchill).
And I completely forgot about Finlay. Thanks for the heads up on that.

I think Burchill would be more of a draw than DH Smith. At least he gets the occasional appearance on Raw and has quite a good win ratio, even if it is only over the likes of Super Crazy and Jim Duggan on Raw. Smith is nothing more than a jobber at the moment.
From DaneBramage on 5/20/08 12:25 PM
That should of course be on Heat, not Raw.
