I feel bad for CM Punk
by cptcharisma1157 on 2/19/08 10:24 PM
At No Way Out we all saw Punk immitate the late Eddie Guerrero, by using his taunt and giving the Three Amigos. It appeared to me that there was a possible heel-turn coming as it seemed like he was mocking Eddie.
Now that I think about, I'm pretty sure he wasn't ridiculing anybody. I think that he had planned on receiving a pop for that. He thought he was paying tribute. Yet his was met with overwhelming boos. This really makes me feel bad for Punk. How would you feel if you were trying to pay tribute to your fallen hero only to find out that it was interpreted as disrespect.
I don't know why, but when I think about what happened it just makes me think "poor CM Punk." There's no worse feeling then when you try to do something nice, but it actually hurts instead of helps.

I think this was simply b/c paying tribute to Eddie has been run into the ground. Chavo used to do it, Rey still does it, even Benoit and others (Homicide in ROH) do it as well. Punk just kinda seemed to join the party late, that's all.

one thing I just thought of is that maybe Punk really did take it hard, and so they decided to let him team with Flair tonight so he doesn't look disrespectful toward the older generation.

yeah I agree with bpapa, also due to the fact that he was facing a Guerrero had something to do with it.

the thing is Mysterio was the first to pay tribute to Eddie Guerrero even before Chavo

I don't think it was meant to pay tribute, but to mock Chavo.
Chavo has been using the Three amigos for a long time now, and the WWE is trying to make it part of his move set and not tribute to Eddie.
I think Punk doing the 3 amigos was meant to mock Chavo, not to offend someone, or even get a pop.

I agree, but I think people are worn out on the Eddie tributes. I never had a problem with them, but people didn't like it back when Rey was doing it.

No Way Out is where Eddie won his WWE Title so if you're gonna do an Eddie tribute No Way Out is a good place to do it BUT ...
1) As people have already said, Eddie tributes are getting old. Eddie died 2 1/2 years ago it's time to let it rest already.
2) You can't do an Eddie tribute for the first time against a Guerrero. If Punk had been doing this fo a while that would be different. But to out of the blue pull an Eddie Tribute while feuding with Chavo was very stupid timing and could easily be perceived as mocking Eddie.
3) But I tend to agree with what Punkfan said, maybe Punk wasn't paying tribute to Eddie maybe he was mocking Chavo. Doing a guys move set on him is the ultimate insult. Unfortunately, Chavo's move set doesn't really belong to him but instead belongs to one of the most popular wrestlers of recent memory.

Well, it's such a generic move too. What, now no one can do rolling suplexes anymore? I'm almost positive Eddie wasn't the first person to ever do them. I remember Beniot using three snap suplexes in the same manner around the same time Eddie started using them, and I'm pretty sure it had been done before by someone else.
Chavo's whole moveset is not based off of Eddie's. He had a perfectly good moveset while he was still in WCW. Frankly, I think his Brainbuster is a better setup move than the Three Amigos.
I will argue the Frogsplash to the death. Technically the move wasn't Eddie's in the first place and he was only using it as a tribute. I think it might be a step to far if Punk started using it, but I think people like Christian, Rey, and Chavo are perfectly within their right.

Well I think that a lot of the sheep in the crowd think that if a certain person does a gesture in reference to Eddie it has to be booed. Doing it in a match verses Chavo is gonna get you booed Take for example right after Eddie passed they documented that in real life Eddie and JBL were great friends, JBL gave Eddie credit for helping him through a really tough time in his life. During one of the tribute shows JBL did the Shoulder roll that was Eddie's gesture. He did not do this with a smile on his face, or in a mocking manner. I truly believe he did it to pay tribute to his friend. He nearly got booed out of the building, you would have thought the fans were gonna hang the guy for his effort. And why because JBL was a heel and the sheep know this, you boo a heel. The plain and simple of it.
