How do YOU pick YOUR wrestler of the week?
by DaneBramage on 5/5/08 9:11 AM
What criteria do you use? Good matches? Kayfabe achievements? Importance of promotions wrestled for?
This week Triple H came top of the wrestler of the week poll, and as the new champion on Raw that can't really be argued with. However, being champion is nothing new for him as this is his 12th reign at the top. So for that reason, I only voted him in second place, instead giving my top spot to Matt Hardy. Obviously the US Title isn't as prestigious as the World Title, but winning it is more important for Matt Hardy's career than winning the World Title is for Triple H's. This is a sign that WWE still has faith in him after his long break from action, and the pay-off to a long running feud.
Similarly, that is one of the reasons that Jeff Hardy had such a good run towards the start of this year, as despite not managing to win the Title from Randy Orton, he was putting in good battles against him at the top of the card, an area he had never really had an extended run in before.
Good matches is a bit of a tricky one to use as criteria to include in the voting, as some weeks ROH shows are reported on as having several ****+ matches. The week with the Supercard of Honor/Dragon Gate shows could have been filled entirely with ROH wrestlers just for these. However, these are just fans' opinions on the matches, a proper educated opinion on them cannot be formed until several months later when the DVD is released, and so I try not to include wrestlers included in good matches on the indy scene unless there is universal opinion that it was a classic. For WWE and TNA good matches in the ****+ range are less common, so this is normally a good enough reason to include the wrestlers if it happens on one of the TV shows.
I normally check out the results for lots of promotions, so chances are that my nominations are more varied than most. In recent weeks I have voted for wrestlers from WWE, TNA, ROH, PWG, IWA-MS, CHIKARA, and IPW:UK. If more Japanese wrestlers were available I also would have voted for Keiji Mutoh (winning NOAH's IWGP Heavyweight Title for the fourth time), Suwama (winning AJPW's Champion Carnival Tournament and Triple Crown) and Gamma (winning Dragon Gate's Open The Brave Gate Title). I also would have voted for MsChif for winning the SHIMMER Title from Sara Del Rey.

I really only take WWE and TNA into account, and sometimes ROH if there's something big going on. I do take match quality into some account, so if I can't see it there's less of a chance of it making it into my top 10. Also, on this site voting for indy and Japanese promotions is like voting for independents in an election, the most it really does is take votes away from one of the bigger candidates.
I am always partial to ring skills and athleticism over works and kayfabe. If I voted on who made the greatest kayfabe impact I think my top 10 would be exclusively WWE, as they always try to play up every match as if it's absolutely huge (Taker vs. Festus anyone?) That being said, there's no ignoring works. I usually give higher votes to underdog victories and people you wouldn't expect to win, and Title matches always get votes. One thing I also do is give votes to losers in big matches for having strong showings. I've been sort of lax when it comes to voting, but I think if I did vote this week that I'd go with what you said and put Matt higer than Triple H.

I go mostly based on push, but have a slight bias towards guys I like. For instance, I'll vote John Cena or Randy Orton highly because they are champs and b/c I enjoy their work, but I didn't really do the same with the Great Khali. I also factor in what some guy is actually doing on the show each week - so even though in theory, HHH, John Cena, and JBL were "pushed" the past month as part of being in the Backlash main event, the fact that neither of the three were very interesting hurt their marks a little bit.
Since I barely pay attention to ROH and TNA anymore I rarely find myself putting those guys on my list - unless there is a tremendous buzz off of something like, as a recent example, Samoa Joe winning the TNA title.
The great thing about the Top 10 is that MY list doesn't matter, nor does DaneBramage's or theone86 (if he made one, that is :p ), but the collective does. For example, on this week's Top 10, only 6 of the guys I voted for made the final list. And, that was on a week when the guys I would vote for would be most likely to make the list since WWE was coming off of a PPV.

I base it mostly on whether I enjoyed watching them as well as accomplishments.
