A Coin Has Two Sides: The Return Of Y2J & Edge
by Petedaddydolla on 11/25/07 12:38 PM
With the 2nd Coming of Y2J and Edge in the books the WWE is at a crossroads. They can use these returns to bolster their ratings and increase the PPV buy rates. Now I have no substantial evidence that the buy rates were actually lower than usual, but one could only imagine that would be the case lately. The story lines have been increasingly stagnant, the only thing we had to look forward to was Y2J's impending return. Which was much hyped and speculated, WWE and Jericho worked that angle to perfection(So Far)by pushing it along with the teaser promos(youtube=v=9vQrruLQl4E)for a month and a half. Now flip the coin to the side with Adam "Edge"Copeland's smiling face on it and see how his less-than-anticipated return to the ring at Survivor Series went. This is where things went sour for me, the way they handled this story line.
I will try to remain as objective as I can because the writers have done 2 things wrong with Edge already: #1.Having him interject himself into one of the best Hell In A Cell matches in recent history(My opinion) and #2. I am sickened by the way Vickie Guerrero and Edge were making out on Smackdown also. First let me say that I am glad that Vince had a heart and put Mrs. Guerrero on the payroll after Eddie died. But I don't like the fact that Edge's tongue was in her mouth on Friday. Why do we need to see this, this story line is as whack as the Maye Young/Mark Henry baby that turned out to be a hand, wasn't it? I guess WWE writers are on strike and they brought back Ed Ferrara to be a "scab" while the pros are on strike!
Edge returned with no heat in my estimation, while Jericho was literally pushed to the ceiling . He should have been, everyone wants to see him back in the ring because he has what the WWE needs right now :CHARISMA. I do not like Edge's character, never have. The only time I thought he was kind of cool was back in the days of the Brood with Gangrel and Christian. This is why the character works though, he evokes the response to "Hate" him. So for that he does his job so I tip my hat to Mr. Copeland for a job well done. But when he is on the microphone he just doesn't have IT. Cena has it,Austin has it, Rock has it, Edge doesn't even come close. After Raw last Monday night it was evident that Jericho never lost it!

Good points, and I agree with a lot of what you said. One thing I disagree with is saying that Edge doesn't have charisma. He may not be able to equate to charisma of Jericho, but who can? In my opinion Edge has some of the best mic skills in all of wrestling. If he didn't, he would be able to make every body hate him. He used to be very beloved. He started the "U Suck" chant to go along with Angle's music, and very easily got the crowd on his side in the day. Not a lot of wrestlers can pull off the heel and the babyface so perfectly. Whether it be a cocky character, a whining character, a disguting character, an intimidating character, or a funny character; Edge can play the part. I think his mic skills are "totally reeking of awesomeness."
To compare Cena to Austin, the Rock, and Jericho is obsurd. I'm not just going to sit hear and bash Cena, but I am gonna say that he has no mic skills. He can get the crowd (made up of children and women) on his side. But he just isn't entertaining. He tries to be funny and just throughs a gay joke out there, that usually doesn't make any sence. Cena has a certain ring presence to his name, one that brings love from some fans and hate from others. But what he doesn't have is charisma. He has the look, and the writers on his side, pushing him untill the end of the world.
I've gotten off topic. This was supposed to be a discussion about Edge and Jericho... That being said. I do agree that Jericho's return has been better. But I think the main reason is that he was gone for much longer. Had Edge been absent for two years, he would 1) be returning with the crowd on his side, and 2) his return would be one of the best things in wrestling.

See I just can't get on the Edge bandwagon, not to say that you are either. I just can't see another Edge/Batista thing. I mean and the other side of that is who wants to watch Batista/Undertaker again and again. I respect what he does in the ring, I respect the effort he puts forth because he must do something right to keep getting a push. I mean he was on all the Survivor Series promos with his chainsaw. I just plain don't like him I guess. He gets heat from the crowd which means he does something right, I wouldn't put him in a top 10..not even 25. Just my opinion though, take it or leave it.

captain charisma, I completely agree with you. but its not just for those like Edge or Jericho, that idea goes for every superstar that has been gone for a while. Hell, I'm sure even someone like Super Crazy or Kenny Dykstra could get a huge reaction if they were gone for two years. all it takes is a little hype and a good writing staff and even someone like Shane-O-Mac could get a huge pop on a return to the ring.

Ok, now hulkamania makes a good point. Anybody can make a great come back after a long absence. The crowd would love to see Tajiri or Too Cool get into the ring, so your right. I still think a huge Edge comeback would easily beat a midcard comeback no matter what the length.
And Petadaddy, you don't like Edge and that's fine. Everbody's got their own opinions, and I like that you can still admit Edge has done "something right." He's not really one of my top favorites, but I do think he's one of the best there is: in the ring and on the mic.
As for Edge/Batista and Batista/Taker. I agree, I don't want to see either of those. I want to see Edge/Taker. Get the title off of Batista, and let the real superstars wrestle.

i dont know, i dont really like some of the aspects of Edge's return. I agree with petedaddydolla when he talks about not liking Edge getting involved in an amazing hell in a cell match, and i too dont like the whole thing with Edge and Vickie. If they though that a superstar having an affair with the GM was an original idea, then they obivously forgot about Krystal and Teddy. I think they could have gone a different and better way with the return, maybe he could have come in after the match or something, like when he got the title from Taker after that steel cage match.
Heres what i think:
Edge beats Batista (likely with some help from Vickie)
Edge begins a long feud with Taker, possibly long enough to go to Royal Rumble or Wrestlemania (a RAW superstar would likely win the RR and challenge for the WWE title)
if it goes to WM, Taker goes 16-0 for WM all time and comes out champ

heres my take on everything, 1.Edges return sucked---sorry to all u loyal edge fans beacause quite frankly im one of them. but really that HIAC match was really good and i dont really like batista a whole lot, he doesnt have much ability. Edge has way more experience and aktualy worked his way up. The thing with edge and vickie----Eddie should come back and slap edge in the back of the face. That was ridiculous. But w/e i dont wanna c edge batista again, cuz last time around it sucked, edge taker, i still donno. What needs to happen in to push someone else up instead of just 3 people. Geez i mean only a few guyz are getting push, and guess what, there on raw. Now Hardy is out. So as for a feud, its gonna be the same old same old. As for Y2J on raw---huge comeback, great skill on the mic and in the ring. Now Raw is doing something right. Y2J may not beat Orton, i bet he will. but hes not like batista or cena as if they dont have a title or in a title feud then they are basically worthless talent. thats just my take

Petedaddydolla ~ You make some interesting comparisons here about the Edge and Jericho returns. Jericho's was undoubtedly the bigger of the two for all the reasons mentioned above. I'm very big on Edge and even my anticipation for his return was eclipsed by that of Jericho's. But again, when you weigh the two out, it's a no contest.
I thought the Hell In A Cell was alright, but I bought the PPV looking forward to that match and I was a little underwhelmed (but that was probably my own expectations getting the better of me). Edge's appearance robbed many people of the clean finish, and in my mind, that's perfect because what better way to get heat than to screw everyone? Edge has virtually made a gimmick out of screwing people (Matt Hardy? Think of all 3 times he won the title - major screw jobs. And this one was just another brilliant edition).
And no, Edge is not in the same league on the stick as Jericho, but few people are. The only person that I really believe that compares to Jericho on the mic is the Rock (even Austin and Cena I feel are a bit shy of Y2J). But as far as charisma goes, Edge has a ton of it. The 5 second pose? Angle sucks? C'MON! Just because he's monotone doesn't mean he doesn't have personality.
As for Jericho never losing it, I couldn't agree more. If anything, Jericho got more of IT. He sounds like a rock star or a movie star. He's as exciting as ever! Hearing him on commentary too was great. I can't wait to see what he can do when he goes the distance.
Great piece, keep up the good work.

Thank you for the kind words jmabery, it is actually nice to agree to disagree with the people on this sight because there is LITERALLY NO HOSTILITY! Fantastic points to you about the "Edge Screws Everyone" angle, I would be remiss if I didn't say kudos to you on that point. Yes I must give the devil his due on the fact that Adam Copeland has come along way since his "Damon Striker" days in WCW!(How many of you rememeber that!) He has had some PHOENOMENAL ladder matches with his former partner Christian against the Hardys and the Dudleys. So in closing while i'm not of fan of Edge, I can't - not be a fan simply out of respect for his level of talent. I am done rambling folks!
